How to configure UPS power supply in data center?

In the electrical system of data centers, UPS power supply (AC or DC) is a key equipment to ensure high quality, continuity, and availability of power supply. Without UPS power supply, the availability of IT applications in data centers is basically not guaranteed.

1. Input voltage: A wide range of input voltage is required to meet the requirements of China's power grid. The input voltage range should reach -30%~+15% of the rated input voltage, which represents the current high-tech level.

2. Power supply reliability: Power supply reliability involves disciplines such as power electronics and materials. The improvement of the average time between failures for a single device is limited by the theories of related disciplines and the limitations of semiconductor materials. At present, it is difficult to make breakthroughs, and the technology has already matured. The use of redundancy technology is currently the main way to improve the reliability of UPS power supply systems.

3. Scalability: Considering current load requirements is one aspect, while scalability focuses on the future. Considering the demand for the system in the future business growth, if we want the power of the system to increase along with the actual demand, we need to pay special attention to scalability when purchasing UPS. Through analysis, the integrated characteristics of modular UPS systems can greatly improve the reliability and availability of the system.

4. Utilization efficiency: The actual efficiency depends on the load size: when the load is 50%, the overall efficiency of the machine should not be lower than 70%; When the load is 60%, the overall efficiency of the machine should not be lower than 80%. When a traditional tower UPS device performs one redundancy in 1+1 redundancy mode, the load of each device will not exceed 50%, but the efficiency will be lower than 60%, indicating relatively low energy consumption. In a modular system that operates normally, reasonable power capacity can be configured according to the actual load, and 2 to 4 redundant power modules can be left, which is undoubtedly both convenient and efficient.

5. Space occupation: The system occupies valuable ground space in the data center, so it is important to ensure that the selected configuration does not require additional space.

6. Modularization: If IT demand is expected to grow, a modular approach should be considered. Purchasing more equipment in advance than is currently required will increase capital expenditures, storage space, and potential operating costs. The modular approach allows for the addition of infrastructure when needed, avoiding previous facilities becoming useless as demand grows.
